Having just graduated from the Central Film School London’s screenwriting course, I can usually be found tapping away at my computer at the kitchen table in the vain hope that my stories might eventually find an audience. I’m interested in stories that delve deep into the human heart and refuse to let go of you. With respect to my writing, I usually veer between absurdly misplaced confidence and abject insecurity. The main thing is I haven’t given up yet. I live in North London with my husband, two occasionally adorable kids and two cats. Yeah – it’s tough! I wrote a feature length screenplay as part of my graduation – a great learning experience, but it was far from perfect! Have recently been having a go at writing for radio, and am now planning to write a few shorts that hopefully might stand a chance of getting made. How about you?
Yeah, I have two feature screenplays written, to varying degrees of greatness. They are only sitting at home some where though! I just have no idea as to how to even break into that world really. I need to be in the mindset to be able to write, and most of the time I’m not! I would love to write a low/no budget script and shoot it myself, even if just using my iPhone, but I have no idea how to go about it!
I think that’s a great way to start – it’s definitely easier to do that these days and put something up on Youtube or vimeo. There’s a group of screenwriters that meets most Tuesday evenings called Soho Screenwriters. I don’t go every week, only if the session looks interesting, but you might find them helpful. It’s run by a guy called Colin Surrell. He’s quite a character, to put it mildly, but I think the advice he gives is sound. Hi Veronica. I live just North of North London (Hertfordshire) but I was born in Willesden Green so that makes me a North Londoner. And I’m attending my youngest of three children’s wedding this coming weekend so they’ve grown out of the adorable stage, but otherwise I’m just like you (well insecure anyway) but much older!
I’ve just started blogging and I wondered if you could let me know how you found out about my posts? I’m just not sure how this thing works! Was it just by searching through all the freshly pressed? Or is it cleverer than that?

It’s lovely to hear from you and find out that we’re practically neighbours! I must confess I’m not much of a WordPress expert. In terms of who I follow, I have found some things on freshly pressed, but also some times I look at the blogs of people that are following the same blogs that I do ie to see if it looks like they might have common interests and if so, then I might send a message or follow them too. I’ve also sometimes started to follow people that I’ve come across on Twitter or who’ve started to follow me. That’s all I’ve done really – there’s nothing scientific about it! There probably is a more structured way to do it, but I haven’t found it so far. I find it has tended to build up over time. Anyway good luck with your blog. Also I hope you enjoy the wedding at the weekend and that the sun shines for you. My daughter’s doing her overnight hike for the Duke of Edinburgh award this weekend, so I’m very much hoping the same for her sake too!

Firstly thank you for the like and the follow and secondly for introducing me to your site. It is always great to hear of or from a fellow blogger and screenwriter. Writing is definitely hard work, labour intensive and dare I say tests the psyche. But the more I enjoy my writing, the easier it gets. Sadly this is the only good advice I can give presently. If anything more useful occurs in the interval, I will be sure to mention it. I am an ex-North Londoner. Not sure if this is relevant.

Nice to hear from you; thanks for following me too. Yes I did enjoy the story I read – and will definitely look out for the others. I’m a relatively inexperienced writer, and have mostly been attempting to write for the screen. That’s been very good for structure, but has quite a few limitations too ie you can’t include anything of what’s going on in your characters’ heads – everything has to be in what they say and do. Recently I’ve started writing some short stories too. I’m keen to create stories that have an emotional impact and have been experimenting in how to do that most effectively. It’s really interesting and instructive to see how other people are approaching the genre. I have to say I’m lucky to have found such a lovely, supportive group of fellow writers here on wordpress!
